About Mike Risley

1. Introduce yourself. Where are you from? What should listeners know about you?

Hello there. It's Mike. I'm more or less from all over, having lived in 16 cities and 9 states. Mostly Mid-West and the South East, but most recently in Millcreek, UT.

2. What games or types of games are you interested in?

I'm interested in most games. There are few I will turn down playing if I asked. I grew up playing games, from the kids games through to the semi-moderns mass market games in the 90s. Then in 2006 I found more modern games through Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne and Fjords. Then in 2012 I found the wider world of board games with City of Iron, Seeland and King of New York. I've fallen pretty much into the Mid-weight Euro range these days. I need to try more thematic games again, but we'll see.

3. Do you have a favorite game or games you enjoy most?

My favorite game is Concordia by far. I love how the board and deck building work together. Watching my influence spread across the board. I wish I could play it more.

4. What are some of the most memorable experiences have you had with tabletop board games in the past?

I don't really have many exciting stories. Thinking back about game plays the ones that most come to mind are all the games with my wife and kids. We don't play a lot together, but I always enjoy it when we do.

5. What is the focus of your WDYPTW segment?

So, my segment is as of yet unnamed, as I'm not really good at such things. What I've always tried to envision is if someone asked me to describe a game, what would I say? I sometimes stray from that format a little, but I generally envision myself sitting across the table from a board gaming buddy telling them about the game. That's why I try not to get too much into the mechanisms or rules. I don't want to be anyone's main source of information on a game. I much prefer pointing out games that I enjoy, especially something that doesn't get the recognition it deserves, and hopefully inspire people to learn more about it.
